Books I’m currently reading

Hey guys,

With me taking a hiatus this past couple week, I thought it’d be appropriate to talk to you guys all about the book’s I’m currently reading this month!

With Christmas Break upon us, I hope to get a bunch of reading done before the beginning of the new year! Currently, I’m reading Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. I have to say that this book has me really hooked. I officially started it yesterday, and are already done with a good 3/4th’s of it. Hopefully, If I can manage to find the strength to do it; I can finish it tonight and pump out a review by tomorrow.

From what I’ve read so far, Ready Player One has been amazing! The creative story and the references to books or movies on every page are HIGHLY entertaining. The plot is simple; yet intriguing. I think it’s safe to say that this book will most likely show up on my top 10 favorite books of the year.

Another book that I’ve been starting is Magician by Raymond E. Faust. This book is one that has been suggested to me time and time again. Even now, I have two copies of the book and I still haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE, NOW! I have my copy, I’m motivated, and I’m ready for a great fantasy read. From what I’ve read online, review’s have been pretty mixed, but my grandfather has said that it’s amazing, so I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, the last book I’m currently reading is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I know, I know. I’m re-reading them again. It feels like just yesterday I finished them, but yes, I do re-read the series each year in December. It’s become an unofficial holiday event for me, and somehow I’m loving it more and more each year. Currently, I am also halfway through the book, so expect a new and updated review around next week.

Thank’s for reading! Make sure to comment and let me know what books you are currently reading? Have any of you read these books before? Let me know what you think about them.

Until next time, goodbye!

5 tips for how to read more in 2017

Hey guys,

So I had the idea for this post while I was reading this week. Then I asked myself a question.

“What are my tips for reading more?”

Everybody know’s that there is no “cheat” to reading. You can’t really cheat reading. (Unless you don’t read. But why are you here if you hate reading?”

Below I will have my top five tips for reading more, enjoy!

1.Speed read

Now I  know what you’re thinking. Speed reading? *Raises eyebrow* I came all this way for speed reading? Yes, yes you did. Howard Berg, the fastest reader in the world did a study a couple of years ago when he was asking the same question you are. What he found was amazing, and sort of obvious. Remember in school how they encouraged you to use your finger to read the text underneath? In a nutshell Howard proposes to use your finger and slide it across the page, while reading as fast as you can comprehend. For me, this works. For others, not so much.  Personally, I like to take my time reading all of the words that took the author so long to put on the page, the description, the setting. I love it all! If you feel speed reading is for you, I would highly recommend you look at this page for more information.

2. Carry your book, everywhere.

If your like me, you don’t have as much time as you’d like. (Does anyone one this puny earth?) I don’t get the leisure of sitting around all day reading to my heart’s content.  So what do I do? The answer is simple, take a book everywhere. You never know if your teacher will be five minutes late, and instead of wasting it surfing instagram mindlessly you could be KILLING DRAGONS! You never know when you’ll be in a long car ride, or when you’ll be watching a movie for a class, this way you will ALWAYS be ready. You never know when you’ll have those little pockets of free time. So be prepared.

3. Say no to social media

Unless you’re some turtle hiding under a rock you probably have witnessed first hand at how distracting social media can be. People can spend hours at a time on instagram or snapchat. What I don’t get is why people can’t cut that time in half and spend the other reading a good book. The point I’m making in this is simple. Spend as much time reading your book as you do wasting it with social media. If you’re doing this constantly I promise that books will become your new social media. You underestimate yourself! Make goals, fight, and WIN!

4. Audio books

Another way I read so much is through these bad boys. *Scrolls through vast collection of audio books* No, I’m not rich. No I don’t buy them illegally. I just merely downloaded my local library’s app Overdrive. For those who aren’t aware Overdrive is an online e-book and audio book library that sinks up with your library card. You can download them on your phone, kindle, tablet, etc. And the best part is that it’s totally free.

Overdrive on Google Play
5. Constantly be reading

How are you going to finish a book if you’re not reading? The answer is” you’re not. It’s that  simple, if you care about reading you’ll read. Mix it up, try something new. Instead of reading your 40th fantasy book of the year, try sci-fi. Expand your horizons and make 2017 the best reading year of your life!

That’s all folks! Thank’s for reading! Hopefully these tips will help you as you continue your reading endeavors for 2017! Hope you have an amazing reading year! Comment below the book your reading right now!

Thanks! Happy reading.

Tips for NaNoWriMo

Hey guys,

So today I want to talk about the craziness that NaNoWriMo creates. Recently I’ve found myself constantly day dreaming about my idea for my National Novel Writing Month story and the crazy adventure that is about to occur in 7 days. But then, while dreaming I had a thought. I’ve been doing NaNoWriMo for two years now and this will be my third attempt, And as I’ve been writing I’ve figured out what to do, and (unfortunately) learned what not to do. I thought I’d share some with you.

Write Write Write

Nanowrimo is a time to get words paper or screen or whatever you do to write. It is NOT a time to sit around starting to outline. It is not the time to be browsing Instagram daily. It is not the time to sit around editing the work you’ve written the day before (That’s after you write the novel) Trust me I’ve tried every trick in the book and nothing has worked so if you want to get something done the sad and unfortunate way is that THERE IS NOT SHORTCUT!  Instead of complaining just write it!

One way that I get words on the page is to set up a writing playlist. Personally I use Spotify (Which I love!) and browse through all of the Movie scores. (Background music with no words to it) The reason I do this is because it get’s me in the writing zone faster as well as help’s me set the mood and tone for the scene I will be writing that day. If you’re looking for some suggestions I personally love to listen to the X-Men music as well as Star Wars, Star Trek, and countless other music. If you haven’t tried already I would highly recommend you try to write to music with no words the next time you write.

In order to accomplish anything you need to be able to have someone that is excited for you and will always be their to cheer you on. Thankfully, I have a ton of support from Aunts and Uncles all the way to my Brothers and my parents. Now I know some of you readers out there will be like “Well Jared, I don’t have parent’s who support me or my family isn’t crazy supportive. Never fear, If you feel you have no support YOU ARE WRONG! I support all that you do and write and I know that you can do this!

All writers outline whether they realize it or not. An outline can be an idea or can be a crazy 7 paged outline full of wants in a scene as well as sub-plot and other miscellaneous notes.(Me) I highly recommend outlining because it makes me not veer off track or loose my motivation.

Okay, that was a few of my tips and tricks! For more content like this go to dabook.club for more! Also, Make sure to hit the subscribe button if you like this and want to see more NaNo Posts. Plus I’ve been thinking about doing daily updates through instagram, If you like the idea and want to see it happen comment below to let me know!

Thanks everyone!

Quarterly Writing/Reading Goals

Hey Guys,

So In case you aren’t aware every quarter I try to come up a couple of goals that I HAVE to complete by the end of the quarter. I find that as I post my goals here on the internet I tend to try my best to complete them because I hate the embarrassment that I feel when I don’t complete something. Usually these goals are reading and writing related but they don’t have to be all that. So without further ado let’s begin!

  1. Write and finish a First Draft!

Because National Novel Writing Month is coming this November I obviously have to participate! I LOVE my idea so I’m pretty sure I’ve got this all in the bag. As for me telling you the idea… Well I’m gonna save that for a future post

2. Start edits for Ever the Stars.

So way back when I finished my previous Camp NaNoWriMo I just stopped. No edits, no lookbacks. Stopped. THIS IS ABOUT TO CHANGE! Starting now from the end of October to after November I will be doing edits for my short story. Yes I’ve decided it’s story isn’t long enough to be a novel. So, I need to look back at it, re-read it, and figure out what to do next.

3. Get to 300 followers on Instagram

For those who have an instagram and don’t follow me my book account is @Jared_dabook.club right now I have 210 followers and I hope to aim to get that to get my blog out their!

4. Read 6 books!

As you all know I haven’t been reading up to par recently. And with Nano around the corner It’s  only gonna push reading farther away. So my hope is that with this goal it will get me to read more.

5. Find a Critique Partner

(Sort of Self Explanatory)

6.  Consistently post at least twice a week.

Well those are my goals! Thank you for reading this post, comment below to tell me what posts you’d like to see in the future!

My Reading Update

Hey Guys,

So I thought I’d let you know all of the reading biz that is going in my life.

  1. Reading

Slowly, I been trickling back into the world of reading. Overall I have read 7 books in the last little while. After having a huge reading slump from Harry Potter I have FINALLY dived back into reading . While I have started I want to try to start slow and work my way up this means something small, AKA a Graphic Novel. For those who don’t know what a graphic novel is basically it’s a long comic book that you have to read in order to get the story, unlike some comic books in which you can just start wherever. Anyway I decided to go with something fantasy and started a Graphic Novel called Amulet.

It’s by Kazu Kibuishi and it’s made me obsessed. I started with book one and thought it was okay. Next, I started book two and it was better, Finally I started book three and was hooked from then on. For those who aren’t aware Amulet is basically about a girl named Emily who gets an amulet, finds another world, oh and did I mention her Mother got kidnapped by a creature in this “new” world? The book is very interesting and I would highly recommend it to people who want to start reading Graphic Novels.

Novel wise I have sucked. I’ve started a few books and I just can’t seem to be able to finish one. I started reading the Iron Trial by Cassandra Clair and Holly Black, It wasn’t bad, in fact it was good. I just couldn’t seem to find the motivation to find it. THOSE WHO HAVE READ HARRY POTTER AND BEEN IN A MAJOR SLUMP  HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE? I NEED BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS AND I NEED THEM FAST. I CAN’T SURVIVE THE SLUMP MUCH LONGER!

2. NaNoWriMo

In other news National Novel Writing Month is coming this November. For those who don’t know it’s a time when all writers of the world try to write 50K which is essentially a novel, in ONE month. Yes I know it’s crazy, Yes I know it seems impossible. BUT I CAN DO IT! I can’t really tell you a bunch of my plans for it but it’s probably my best idea yet and I think it’s “The One.”

Anyway thanks for reading this post! I will try hard to continue to post now that school is clearing up!
