Movie Review-Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Hey guys,

So I just wanted to add my SPOILER-FREE thoughts about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While there has been a wide variety of thought and feelings expressed about this movie, I thought I’d add my opinion to the mix to let you decide if watching this movie would be something for you.

Easily one of the most hyped movies of the year, The Last Jedi has its shortcomings, but makes up for it with an amazingly strong final performance of Carrie Fisher’s “Princess Leia”. One of the strongest points in the film, Leia finally accomplishes something that contributes to the film as a whole, unlike a large portion of JJ Abrams’ Force Awakens.  She is depicted as a leader of the resistance, and every scene she appears in, her character automatically makes it better.

Another one of my favorite things about The Last Jedi was that we got to explore deeper into the mind of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and finally get to dig deeper into that raw conflicted emotion we were introduced to in The Force Awakens. Personally, Kylo Ren’s story arc in this movie is one of my favorites in the Star Wars universe. It’s fresh, and it’s realistic. No one is just good or just bad, it adds layers to the character, and it’s really interesting to see a conflicted villain.

In my opinion, director Rian Johnson did an incredible job with the work that he created. He not only contributed to existing characters and locations but also established and created TONS and TONS of characters. This movie is filled to the BRIM with worldbuilding. You get to visit many new locations, and it really pays off in showcasing many beautiful places we’ve never gotten to experience yet.

The beautiful part about this film is that it is not afraid to take risks, something that I think it partially adding to conflicted reviews currently trending in the media. With new ideas being presented in the film changing the course of the whole series forever, some people may resent, but I personally think that this is a step closer to victory. Ultimately,  if Star Wars wants to continue to be as massive and as popular as it is, they need to constantly re-invent themselves and present new material in order to make people WANT to come back not knowing what to expect next.
