Fantastic Beast and Where to Find them (SPOILER) Movie Review

Hey Guys, So Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came out a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I’d post all of my thoughts, feels, as well as reassure all other Potterheads out their about the movie. To better express all of my thoughts I thought I’d go through this review and go through each character and talk about all of the notes and thoughts I had while watching this movie. Also be warned, THIS IS A SPOILER REVIEW! I will be discussing about all of the things, so If you’ve not seen it. Go see it, and then come back and we’ll all talk about this together.

Newt Scamander:  I loved Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of Newt. He was just so very introverted and kept to himself a lot and I personally felt the actor was the best person to play Newt Scamander. I have to say after partly watching this movie I kept on coming back to the fact that Newt was so much like Hagrid, it was a little weird. Both are introverted, both have creatures, both expelled from Hogwarts. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Another thing I thought was interesting was the magical creatures. Instantly I fell in love with all of the creatures, but before watching the movie I couldn’t have even imagined how important they are to the story, Originally  I had  thought that they were side line characters and had no purpose and weren’t that important. But, After watching the movie I found myself totally wrong by the end of the movie. I felt as though the creatures added a light-hearted feel to this rather dark and grim story. Speaking of a grim story I especially enjoyed when Newt and the crew were in his suitcases and he mentioned a Lestrange. It was just another one of the many hat tipping moments to the Harry Potter movie that made it so enjoyable.

Tina Goldstein: Going into this movie I had mixed feelings about Tina. I wasn’t sure If I’d like her, or if she was too serious to enjoy. Boy was I wrong, I loved the strong, self reliant character that she was as well as her interaction with all of the characters. Also I want to find out more about her and Credence’s relationship together. Was she one of the orphans? I want MORE to her past. Speaking of her past remember that scene where they are all being sent to the “Extermination Center.”? I have to say that was probably one of the creepiest parts, from the white walls and how calm the Ministry Workers it gave me a ton of chills.

Jacob Kowalski: I have to say part of the reason I liked the movie so much was because of the dumb, funny, humor that came between him. for those who need reminders Jacob has just came back from the war and is looking for a loan to open a bakery when he bumps into Newt and learns all about this society. I have to say by having him as a muggle or (No Maj) It was a clever thing on JK’s part to explain this new society without having to just spew out random bits of information. A lot of his humor comes between him and Quennie Goldstien (Tina’s sister who will be talked about next) Their relationship together was hilarious and really enjoyable.

Queenie Goldstien: A lot of the reason I felt that Queenie was liked was her strong interest in Muggles (Jacob). It made it very entertaining exploring this forbidden love between her as well as Jacob. One of the funniest things in the movie was watching the love between her and Jacob. She was fascinated with the simplest things about Muggles and it made me laugh many times. One of the other things that made me interested was the fact that she was a Legilimentist. For those who’ve read Harry Potter you probably recognize this as the thing Harry was trying to learn from Snape to get Voldemort to not read his mind.

Credence: One of the most interesting characters in JK’s Universe Credence’s story is one of sadness, mystery, and grimness. After killing his Mother who was basically the leader of an Anti-Wizard group and finding out that he was a wizard who couldn’t control his powers making him become a bomb of magic that could destroy the whole world. MACUSA, the USA’s version of the Ministry Of Magic ends up killing Credence, or so they think! In the end you can see a little black speck of the magic that floats away, Newt notices it but doesn’t say anything. Which brings me to my future theories for the next movie.

Percival Graves: One of the best surprise twists of all time was the reveal that Graves was in fact Grindelwald using a Polyjuice potion to turn into a MACUSA operative and tried to influence Credence so that he could use him to destroy the world. Fortunately he was caught and sent to prison but it was a pretty epic reveal that has made me super pumped up for the second movie.

THEORIES:

-Grindelwald will escape prison (obviously) They can’t hold him long, he’s one of the baddest wizards alive. He’ll eventually find a way to get out. It’s just a matter of when and how.

-Credence is alive and Newt will find him and bring him to Albus Dumbledore for help to train him to control his powers: As I mentioned earlier Newt sees a little piece of the magic of Credence escape the grasp of MACUSA and doesn’t mention this to anyone. Also it has been confirmed by one of the deleted scenes that after Newt leaves America we see Credence quietly walk on the same boat that he went on after the whole battle.

-This Lestrange girl Newt had a relationship and briefly mentioned in the movie will show up in the second installment.

-All of the movies will be set in different places around earth: The second movie has already been confirmed by the producer to have the next movie set in Paris. This has me infer that through all of the movies we will see Newt traveling around doing his thing while watching all that is happening with the Grindelwald/Dumbledore situation which would be a good way to show all of the magic around the world as well as finally showcase the epic battle between Grindelwald and Dumbledore.

Okay, I think that’s it. Overall I highly enjoyed it, and recommend anyone who’s even a slight Harry Potter fan to go and see this movie. Plus, If you haven’t seen any of the Harry Potter books or movies, you can still go and start this and will for the most part, not get confused at all.

My Rating:

5 stars
